1 Welcome aboard - we hope you are ready for an exciting weekend getaway. We'll travel northwest today through the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee and on to the Cumberland Mountains of eastern Kentucky. Early afternoon finds us in the town of Stearns, where we'll board Big South Fork Scenic Railway Train for a delightful four-hour roundtrip train ride. Our destination will be the mining town of Blue Heron. This is a re-created 20thCentury mining town where over 300 coal miners once were employed. During our stop here, we'll visit the Depot Museum; the giant coal tipple, miner's houses, church, school and company store. We'll have a "coalminer's lunch" today. Early evening we'll depart Stearns and travel to Corbin, Kentucky for overnight.
2 Our day begins with a visit to the beautiful Cumberland Falls State Park. This awesome waterfall (second highest east of the Rockies) is 65 feet high and 125 feet wide. We then journey to Knoxville for an enjoyable luncheon cruise on the Tennessee River aboard the Star of Knoxville! Sit back, relax and enjoy a delicious lunch as we cruise the waterway. After the cruise we'll travel the short distance to Pigeon Forge for a chance to visit the outlet malls and do some early Christmas shopping before heading home. |
