Nestled between the Chesapeake Bay, the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Maryland’s, Virginia’s and Delaware’s Delmarva Peninsula has quaint waterfront villages, fertile farmland, historic sites and remote islands where natives still speak with an Elizabethan accent.

Good morning and welcome aboard our deluxe motor coach. This will be a travel day for us departing Western North Carolina and journeying northeast today, via I-77, I-81 and I-66 into McLean, Virginia, our home tonight.

Arriving in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, we pay a visit to Longwood Gardens, one the world’s premier horticultural display gardens, created by industrialist Pierre du Pont. It features 11,000 types of plants and 20 outdoor and 20 indoor gardens. Next, we’re off to the Brandywine River Museum, housed in a renovated 1864 grist mill, showcasing works by Andrew Wyeth. Late afternoon we arrive in Baltimore, Maryland, one of America’s oldest cities, in time to enjoy the Inner Harbor, featuring unique shops and a myriad of dining options with breathtaking views of the water. Baltimore is home tonight.

We have a great day planned starting with a tour of Ft. McHenry, an 18th century, star-shaped fort that was the site of the British naval bombardment during the War of 1812 that inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner. Following lunch in Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, we will have a professionally guided tour of the city, visiting the Maryland State House, the oldest U.S. State House in continuous legislative use and the U.S. Naval Academy, home to 4,000 of our country’s future naval leaders. Located beneath the Academy’s chapel is the crypt of John Paul Jones, the navel hero who uttered the famous battle cry “I have not yet begun to fight!” We travel to Easton, Maryland, for overnight.

Making our way to the coastal town of St. Michaels, Maryland, on the eastern coast of the Delmarva Peninsula, we visit the Chesapeake Maritime Museum, housing the world’s largest collection of Chesapeake Bay boats and artifacts. We will board the Patriot for a delightful cruise on the Miles River, part of the Chesapeake Bay Estuary. Relax and enjoy the beautiful views along the way as we listen to our historic narrative on the beginnings of St. Michaels and the evolution of the Chesapeake Bay. Mid-afternoon we arrive in Salisbury, known as the “Crossroads of Delmarva,” for a visit to the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, featuring the world’s largest collection of decorative and antique decoys. This is a treasure trove for anyone who enjoys nature, wildfowl and birding. Salisbury, Maryland, is home tonight.

Late morning we arrive at Nauticus, an exciting science and technology center exploring the power of the sea, located on the downtown Norfolk, Virginia, waterfront. We can tour the USS Wisconsin, one of the largest Battleships ever built and visit the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, introducing us to over two centuries of naval activity in and around the great harbor of Hampton Roads, Virginia. This afternoon we make our way to Chesapeake, Virginia.

Bidding the “Old Dominion” state of Virginia goodbye we travel west and then southwest into the “Tar Heel” state of North Carolina and home.
