New England Seacoast Summer Getaway
June 11 – 19, 2022
We invite you to join us on a great summer vacation that includes more highlights than we have room to mention. Great attractions, historical sites, beautiful scenery, fun things, specialty shopping and delicious meals – this tour includes them all!
Day One: Our tour will depart western North Carolina this morning. Well travel I-40 east to I-77 north (via Fancy Gap) into the Virginia. Our route will take us through the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley and on to Chambersburg, Pa area for overnite.
Day Two: We continue through Pennsylvania this morning and into the “Constitution State” of Connecticutt. Mid afternoon finds us in Groton where we visit the Submarine Force Museum and tour the Nautilus – it's amazing how these vessels can stay underwater for as long as they do and the wartime capability that they have. We travel on to the Providence, Rhode Island area for overnite.
Day Three: Today will be an exciting one for us...mid morning finds us arriving in the outskirts of Boston, Massachusetts! Our first stop is the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The museum showcases the early year of president Kennedy's life as well as his 1000 days in office. We will be inspired by the life and legacy of our 35th president. From here we travel to downtown for lunch (included) at Fanuel Hall (known locally as Quincy Markets) – there are restaurants and shops galore to visit. This afternoon we'll board the trolley (where we can get on and off at our discretion) to see all the sites of “Bean Town” to include the Old North Church (we will tour the church if open), Granary Burying Ground, the Teapot Restaurant, the Old Statehouse and many, many other sites. Late this afternoon we'll travel to the Danvers / Billerica area (north Boston) where we'll spend the next two nights.
Day Four: “New England by the Sea” Another exciting day is in store as we travel up the seacoast of New Hampshire and by way of Kennebunkport, Maine to Portland. We have time to visit Nubble Lighthouse, the Promenade and the Portland Headlight before boarding the Casco Bay Lines Mailboat for an afternoon cruise that take us to Big Diamond Island, Little Diamond and other stops. This is one of a handful of mailboats left in the country, but here it's the only way the island residents can get to the mainland and the only way they can get U S mail delivery! We'll see inlets, hidden coves and the opulent summer homes built on the islands – plus be amazed at the history of this area as the boat captain narrates. We thentravel south a few miles and stop for a special New England meal...you guessed it – a lobster dinner! We return to our hotel for overnite.
Day Five: This morning we travel to Plymouth to see “Plymouth Rock” and the “Mayflower II” (fully restored for the 2020 400th anniversary of the landing of the pilgrims) and other sites as time permits. From here we travel to Cape Cod .We'll overnite in Hyannis for the next two nights.
Day Six: Another exciting day...we travel the short distance to Woods Hole where we board our waiting high speed ferry that will whisk us away to Martha's Vineyard! There our local bus and guide will meet us for a tour of the island. Visit Oak Bluffs, the Methodist Campgound, see the Gingerbread Cottages and have time in Edgartown for lunch and shopping. This is truly the playground of the rich and famous! Late this afternoon we return to Hyannis for overnite.
Day Seven: Today we travel across the southeastern part of Massachusetts by such towns as Fall River and New Bedford...these towns grew up around the textile mills that flourshied here at the beginning of the industrial revolution. We arrive in Newport, Rhode Island where we'll tour the “Breakers” -the opulent 70 room mansion that was built as a summer residence for Vanderbilt family. We then take the ten mile drive to see more fabulous homes including “Hammersmith Farms” - the childhood home of Jacqueline Bouvier and later the “summer white house” for president and Mrs. Kennedy. We'll visit the downtown waterfront area (Newport is the yachting capitol of the world) where you might want to have lunch at the Creamery. This afternoon we'll travel to northern Connecticutt for overnite.
Day Eight: We'll travel across New York state, New Jersey and Pennyslvania today on our way to Hagerstown, Maryland – our home for tonight. We have some special stops planned today that we know you will enjoy (every trip should have a little bit of mystery to it!).
Day Nine: Homeward Bound! What places we've been and what sites we've seen....all good things must come to an end, but we've got pictures and memories to last a lifetime. We'll travel south with a couple of stops enroute and arrive home early this evening – ready to plan our next adventure with Toney Tours!
